Who we are

Chinese Family Tree is an independent reference for English speakers learning Mandarin kinship terms. It is a static website: there are no accounts, comments, contact forms, payments or user submissions.

What we collect

• Server and security logs. Our host, Cloudflare, processes technical data such as IP address, user agent, requested URL, timestamp and referrer to deliver the site, prevent abuse and diagnose errors.
• Analytics. If you accept analytics, Google Analytics 4 (loaded through Google Tag Manager) records pages viewed, events, approximate location derived from IP, device and browser information, and a client identifier. We use this only to understand which pages are useful and to improve the reference.
• Consent choice. Your analytics choice is stored in your browser's local storage so we do not ask on every page. It is not sent to us as a profile.

We do not ask for your name, email address or any account information, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

Analytics and cookies

Google Analytics is off until you accept. The consent banner loads Google Tag Manager only after you choose “Accept analytics”. If you reject, Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics are not loaded. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings.

When analytics is accepted, Google Analytics may set cookies such as _ga and _ga_*, and may store identifiers in your browser. These cookies are used for aggregate measurement, not for advertising. We do not run Google Ads, AdSense or affiliate tracking.

Cloudflare Web Analytics is a cookieless, aggregate measurement service provided by our host. It does not set advertising cookies. It may still process technical request data under Cloudflare's privacy terms.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking analytics cookies does not affect the content of the site.

Legal bases

• Consent for Google Analytics and the cookies it sets. You can withdraw consent at any time; withdrawal does not affect processing that happened before withdrawal.
• Legitimate interests for serving the site securely, preventing abuse and understanding aggregate, cookieless usage through Cloudflare Web Analytics.
• Legal obligations where we must retain or disclose information to comply with applicable law.

Third parties

The site is hosted by Cloudflare, Inc. and uses Google LLC for analytics. These providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Their privacy policies explain their own processing:

Retention

Cloudflare security and request logs are retained according to Cloudflare's settings for the site. Google Analytics data is retained according to the retention setting configured in our analytics property and is used in aggregate. We do not keep analytics data longer than needed for that purpose.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, to request portability, and to withdraw consent. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

California residents may have the right to know, delete, correct or opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information or use it for cross-context behavioral advertising. To exercise a right, email [email protected].

Children

This reference is written for adult and young-adult learners of Mandarin. It is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU/UK), and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

Changes to this policy

If our data practices change, we will update this page and its effective date. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
